How to Accessorize your Dress

Now that you have found the dress of your dreams for your wedding day, how do you finish the look!?
There are SO many choices when looking at tiaras, hair pieces, veils, belts, jewelry….they are all so pretty, and oh the sparkly bling!….how do you know what to pick?

Well friends, we have put together a few tips to help you sort through all the accessory options and finish off your look seamlessly.

1 - Be Yourself
First and most importantly, stick with what you know and like. The goal for your wedding is to look and feel like the best, most beautiful version of your regular self.  For instance, if you rarely wear jewels, there's no need to drown yourself in sparkle and bling it up on your wedding day. Stick to pretty studs or a simple bracelet!

2 - The Décolletage

This is important to consider, because the neckline of your dress will accentuate different features, and so you don’t want your jewelry to be competing with the job the neckline is doing.
Some guidelines are:

  • Sweetheart or strapless neckline - consider a shorter necklace or choker - or skip the necklace and go for drop earrings!
  • V neck - this style is made for some decoration, so a pendant could be the perfect pairing!
  • High Neck - go for the hair accessories and skip the necklace. Easy peasy!

3 - Match your Metals

Based on color theory, some metals just simply look better with certain dress colors. This will help you narrow down your choices.
Some general guidelines are:

  • A blush dress is best paired with rose gold because it highlights the creamy tint of the fabric.
  • A champagne colored dress pairs seamlessly with gold.
  • An ivory dress can be paired with pretty much anything! Silver, gold, rose gold - sparkle, pearl or simple
If your wedding dress already has embellished beadwork, let that dictate the colors of your accessories. (For example, if your gown has gold beading, pick a necklace, bracelet or earrings with a gold base.)

4 - Think outside the jewelry box
There are many ways to accessorize your wedding look beyond the necklace and earrings.  A belt or sash are always a fun option to try out with your dress. A pretty belt is an easy way to customize your gown without having to make alterations. The key to choosing the right waist-cincher is to find one that works with your body type. This is something we can help you with in the store, we got your back girl..or your waist to be more precise!  For instance, thin belts are best with shorter torsos, while wider belts work well with longer ones. An apple shaped figure may need a different type of belt than a pear shaped bride.

5 - Less is More
Take a step back after admiring all the sparkly items, and remember my friend - many times less is more.  You don’t have to have the tiara, a headpiece, the big, sparkly earrings, a belt, flower crown and a veil. Sometimes keeping it simple makes more of a statement, and we want people looking at you, not distracted by all the added adornments.

6 - To Top It Off

We can’t talk about accessories without talking about what goes on top - the veil, hair comb, or headpiece.  There are two main things to consider here - your hairstyle, and your dress shape. When deciding on your hairstyle, be sure to pick something that will compliment the neckline of the dress.

Topping off your look is really an area we love helping our brides in store.  We can show you long (cathedral) veils, short (fingertip) veils, hair pieces and more - all while comparing to your dress. Then you can see what you like and don’t like, and what goes best with your bridal look! We can make suggestions based on your height & dress style while helping you choose.

Oh - and have you seen our in house veil wheel?!  It's pretty spectacular!

We hope this was helpful!  As always, we really look forward to seeing you and help you try on many accessory options.  Let’s nail the finishing touches to best compliment your dress, and YOU!
